What worked then, may not work now.
As their organizations grow, many founders find that their old methods of leadership fail to scale. An “open office” doesn’t work with 500 employees, nor does sitting down with each team member to ensure that they “get it.” Instead, entrepreneurs must rely on systems, processes, and measurements for feedback and control. Metrics quantitave or qualitative let entrepreneurs know how their business is doing and give them control over the results their organization strives toward. Metrics enable employees to manage themselves by keeping them appraised about their performance. But be careful what you measure. After all, what leaders pay attention to, measure, and control determine what startups grow up to be.
